Transportation

Transportation has long been a significant and contentious issue in James Bay.

Tour buses, including those unrelated to the cruise industry, horse and carriages/wagons, pedicabs, and scooters, all add to the transportation mix on the streets of James Bay.

The JBNA 2009 Residents Survey, followed by years of discussions and resident complaints, confirmed transportation as the number one issue in James Bay. Transportation encompasses all modes of transportation including the impact of increased traffic due to the unbridled growth of the cruise industry based in Ogden Point.

Transportation within the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP) focuses on resident and commuter transportation; little attention is paid to tourist transportation, roadway congestion, or deteriorating and narrow sidewalks.

JBNA liases with staff from BC Transit on routing transit bus routing in James Bay and on bus shelters.

Over the past 10 years, JBNA has been working with City data to assess the impact of cruise ship calls on traffic in our community. Both traffic volume and noise impacts have been assessed.

Additionally, several presentations have been made to both the City Council and staff on other transportation issues including crosswalks, speeding, realignment of Dallas/Douglas, open-sound systems, tour bus loads and airport/aerodrome noise & emissions pollution.

In preparation for the City’s Local Area Plan (LAP) process, and in response to Biketoria, JBNA struck an Active Transportation Committee (ATC) whose role was to examine active transportation in our community and to make recommendations regarding dedicated or shared uses of our streets.i
